Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is supplied by large industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety procedures should be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is vital for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging place should be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the station must not be obstructed and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Do not permit items like for instance matches or lighters to be utilized while an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be correctly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
