A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine that is quite like a forklift. It allows the driver to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Usually, order pickers are operated by electricity. These machines are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Usually they are utilized for moving pallets and finishing certain jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The operator of an order picker uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which usually sits fairly close to the ground. The operator can direct the machine to go backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. As soon as the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks can be lifted up to the required level that makes it very convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the materials needed, are situated on a shelf which the operator cannot reach, then whole platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then directed or driven to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, some companies might have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts can be used to finish these specific jobs at several companies instead.
