Among Hysters main safety concerns is safety. It is the reason why they offer many pieces of optional safety devices that could be added to either the work place or the machine itself. Following OSHA standards, Hyster manufactures head and work lamps in addition to both audible and visible warning devices.
The only warning device needed on the lift truck according to ASME B56.1 and OSHA regulations is the steering wheel horn. The horn is basic on all types of forklifts. Even if lift trucks are not required to have audible or visible warning devices, there are several conditions where optional warning devices may be suitable. These factors are unique to each work place or work site and each and every situation needs to be considered individually.
Back-up alarms or motion alarms are the most common safety devices. The noise produced by these alarms are the main factor to consider. First of all, the audible device needs to be distinguished from other kinds of sounds in the work place and the noise should be loud enough to be heard in the work location, even if other equipment may be operating. The ability for workers to hear alarms and determine where the sound is coming from could be compromised if workers wear hearing protection devices. If the alarms are very offensive or disruptive to workers, nearby companies, or nearby residents, alarms might have to be disabled. If noise should be disabled, this must be able to take place readily. Rules also have to be followed to make sure that noise levels do not go beyond OSHA noise limits.
For visible safety devices, most commonly flashing, strobe or rotating lights, many points must be considered and thought must be put into whether visible safety devices may be more appropriate than audible devices. Workplace lighting, presence of reflective surfaces, and operator distraction are main concerns to take into consideration to make certain that safety devices are effective and do not pose a danger to drivers or other workers. Safety light colours must be different from background surfaces and other lights that are within the work place. Safety device positioning are very important. Lights should be able to clear any overhead obstacles. Light placement must not cause the lights to reflect or shine into the eyes of the operator, but shielding of the lights should not excessively obstruct the light's visibility to pedestrians.
Hyster has a range of optional lights to suit numerous application needs such as halogen lights and weather-resistant LED which hold up through shock and vibration as well. As for work lamps and head lamps, OSHA has set standards to make working at night or in dark work spaces a lot safer. Directional lighting is required if the lighting on the lift truck produces less than 2 lumens per square foot. Hyster has numerous choices which will help increase visibility in low-light conditions.
