Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks must be stored in another complex or building so as to be more safe. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity should have "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a secure enclosure that could just be accessible by authorized personnel. It is essential for the operator's safety, as well as everyone they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly complied with.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This job could use retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also necessary to have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Additionally, anybody who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also must be trained to utilize the fire extinguisher safely and effectively. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a lift truck must be properly trained. This training includes a classroom part in addition to hands-on training. When the training sessions have been finished, the individual should be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also covers the proper method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving as well as site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
There should be a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS center situated within the facility where the lift truck is operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals that are used on site. This would also cover the acid in the lift truck battery, along with the propane which is used to refuel the unit.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all workers at all times. For example, if an exposure incident happens, the person has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is required, to should be given without any delay. Usually, if you are not sure if medical care is needed, as a general rule; have a physician examine the injury if you truly believe it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
